$111 per month for home Internet + TV

According to published reports in December 2024, the average household pays about $200 per month for Internet and Cable TV. The sample costs when switching to streaming for the same networks might be about $111 per month, a savings of $89 per month or $1,068 per year.

  • $46 /month Sling Blue (3 streams of  40+ popular cable networks).
  • $10 /month for ESPN+ app (5 streams) ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3
  • $55 /month for minimum 300Mbps Internet (Verizon 5G, T-Mobile 5G, AT&T 5G)
  • $0 /month for local channels after 1 time expense of $450 for a rooftop antenna and DVR.
  • Sling’s optional “Sports Extra” is $11/month and includes  Tennis Channel, ESPNU, NBA TV, ACC Network, ACC Network Extra, beIN SPORTS, Big Ten Network, ESPNews, FS2, and Golf Channel.
  • TOTAL: $111 /month for internet + cable networks + sports networks + local networks

A recent (December 2024) Wow! Internet bill I reviewed disclosed that Wow! charges $22 per month ($264 /year) for local channels via cable, which is about typical for what a cable company charges to deliver networks, including your antenna channels, anywhere that you have access to the internet, even while traveling outside your home. that anyone can receive for free by using an antenna. The company OnTechSmartServices sells a highly rated antenna with installation for about $350 (link below). Please message and I’ll help you find a current 10% discount code for this company.

A DVR is a device that connects to your home network and to an antenna that allows the free over-the-air channels to be distributed wirelessly throughout your home using a smart TV or a streaming device such as a ROKU stick, or Amazon Firestick, or AppleTV. The antenna DVR allows you to record, pause, play, rewind and fast forward the programming that is recorded from the antenna. Two antenna DVRs that I recommend have a one-time cost and no monthly fees. The AirTV Anywhere ($170) integrates with the Sling streaming app and allows you to watch all your content wirelessly in your home and also out of your home, anywhere in North America that you can connect to the internet. Another popular DVR is the Tablo Gen4 ($99) that uses the TABLO app. Neither DVR has monthly fees.

The best deal is to subscribe to Sling Blue for (3 simultaneous streams for $46), and also subscribe to the ESPN+ streaming app (5 simultaneous streams for $120/year). This would allow both the Sling and ESPN+ accounts to be shared on multiple TVs and in various locations in North America.

  • Sling Blue allows 3 simultaneous streams but does not include any ESPN networks.
  • Sling Orange includes ESPN, ESPN3, ESPN3, but allows only ONE stream at a time.
  • Sling Orange or Sling Blue are each $46 per month (as of Dec 2024).
  • You can buy a Sling Blue+Orange Plan for $61 per month Dec 2024), which allows only ONE stream for the ESPN1/2/3 networks, but 4 streams for all other networks.
  • No streaming service has long-term contracts, but are month to month. Some people subscribe to sports networks for only a few months in the summer or fall, then unsubscribe to save money when the sport season ends.
